"First Impact" programme for patients diagnosed with cancer
Free psychological care to help patients and their immediate family members (partners, parents and children) come to terms with the news and adapt to the disease
A support and care programme launched in 2012
No one is prepared to receive a cancer diagnosis. However, new cases are detected every day.
In women, breast cancer is the most common type—according to statistics, 1 in 8 women may suffer from this disease—and although many patients feel strong enough to face it, it is not always easy.
There are moments of hope and others of doubt, and many ups and downs. Many patients do not know how to break the news to their family, especially their children and parents, and others are concerned about the effect that the news, treatment and temporary break in their lives may have on them physically, personally, socially and professionally.
That is why psychological support is essential.
What it consists of
In February 2012, the Dexeus Mujer Foundation launched the “First Impact” programme, which consists of welcoming newly diagnosed patients and their families to help them adapt to the disease.
In this programme, the Dexeus Mujer Foundation provides free funding for a psycho-oncologist to provide initial care for the patient after the diagnosis has been communicated, in order to identify the medical, emotional and social needs of the patient and their family. Once the level of emotional distress has been identified, the psycho-oncologist, if they deem it appropriate, refers the patient to a professional service that can meet their needs and those of their family.
During all visits, the degree of emotional distress is assessed and any areas of concern for the patient are evaluated.
